Please Help Joe and Reid Find Their Disability Friendly Colleges! PDF Print E-mail

Wasn't going to write two blogs this month, but I want to make a pitch for conversation. When we launched this website a few months ago, we wanted to make sure that students with physical disabilities had access to information about colleges that went out of their way to be disability friendly. But we also wanted our site to be an information exchange and not just a monologue.

Over the past few months, we've received several requests for information on colleges that are friendly to other disabilities besides orthopedic ones. But the requests came straight to us, not to the comment box on the website, so other readers did not see them.

One came from Joe, who said, "Do you know of any colleges that deal specifically with vision impaired folks?"

Another came from Reid, who asked about mental illness and college. "Which schools are really supportive of chronic illness of the mind?"

There are also plenty of people out there who would like to hear from those of you who already enrolled at colleges that you think are disability friendly. And those of you enrolled at colleges that are not so friendly.

So, I'm relaying Joe's and Reid's comments because I don't  have too many answers for them. If you can help, please leave a note in the comment box or contact me...Even if you can't help Reid and Joe, please tell us your disability friendly (or unfriendly) college experiences.

We can't wait to hear!

I went to Kutztown University to get certified to teach. they are more disability friendly then many of the colleges in the state of Pa. I did know about Edinboro. but, For the blind, I Know that Kutztown University in Pa is very helpful for it's blind students. The campus is easy to navigate. there are many service dogs on campus for blind students. They also have a certification in special education specifically for being able to become teachers for blind students. So, you might want to check that college out. I also got to teach there as a interim professor years later and loved it. They had a great disability program for cognitive help as well. I sent kids down there in my building which was one of the education buildings and they really helped my students do well and adapt better to the school. I do not know anything about aides or anything like that, but they have a wide variety of housing opportunities and busses on campus and off campus there is a bus that goes to a new apart...
